Viewing Questions:
- How does this film rely on some of the film noir techniques we viewed in The Maltese Falcon (use of contrasting lighting, sparse settings, dangerous urbanscapes or fringe environments, dramatic music to enhance mood, slang or specific language, etc.) to create a noir look to the film?
- How do the main characters of the criminal (Luke-Ryan Gosling) and the police officer (Avery Cross – Bradley Cooper) reflect the morally ambiguous characters of traditional noir films?
- How does the film also explore some film noir elements like greed, double-crossing and betrayal? How does the film break beyond the genre to include some more modern themes, specifically the relationship and responsibilities shared between fathers and sons?
